What to know
People use digital technologies as tools for information, connections, support, creativity, and entertainment. However, social media also has the capacity to leave us feeling inadequate and depressed. Too much screen time, in general, may harm memory, learning, mental health, and sleep.
Do you need a break?
How can you know when it’s time to make a change? Try asking yourself the following questions:
a) Am I fostering meaningful connections?
b) Am I learning something creative or beneficial?
c) Am I bored or seeking a distraction?
d) Am I trying to block out unwelcome thoughts?
If you’re typical motivations align with “c” or “d”, it may be time to rethink your screen usage.
What to do
If you realize you need to make a change, the next step is coming up with a plan and following it. Consider the following strategies:
• Customize your social media feeds. Follow creators that make you feel good.
• Keep track of your screen time. Smartphones and apps often have built-in features allowing you to easily do this.
• Consider a digital detox. Taking a temporary or permanent break may help you feel more grounded.
• Set boundaries. This can include logging out of your accounts once your allotted time is done or putting your devices out of reach at a certain time of day.
Tip: If you’re struggling with sticking to your screen time boundaries, consider reaching out to a mental health professional who can help you get to the deeper root of the issue, and provide tools for success.
