Protein is one of the critical macronutrients required by the body for proper functioning. There are many reasons to augment dietary sources of protein with protein supplements. Vegetarians or those with allergies to milk products or soy may require additional protein. Protein supplements are also used for increasing muscle mass and as an aid to dieting.
Protein supplements most commonly come in the form of bar and powdered mixes. The protein found in such supplements may be sourced from whey, casein, egg albumin, soy or hemp. The average 150-lb. person requires 55 grams of protein per day, but athletes and pregnant or nursing women have higher requirements. Protein deficiency can cause fatigue and frequent illness due to lowered immunity.
