Every year at this time of gift giving, I get the urge to make homemade gifts—especially food gifts. I much prefer giving food than other kinds of presents because I know it will be enjoyed soon and won’t end up at a garage sale or re-gifted (at least I think it won’t).
So I'm especially excited about our hot-off-the-press December issue, which includes several fun-to-make, yummy gifts from your kitchen.
Another great food gift is homemade goat cheese, which is ridiculously simple to make; even kids can do it with a little help. Try this recipe to make your own. (If you're lactose-intolerant, use this method to make lactose-free cheese.
Once you've got it made, have fun adding flavor additions to the basic cheese. A few ideas:
- Work in lemon, lime, or orange zest.
- Roll the cheese in crushed herbes de Provence or dried lavender.
- Knead in sweetened or unsweetened cacao nibs and finely chopped dates.
- Blend with chopped fresh basil, oregano, or dill.
- Stir in flavored or plain honey.
