Healthier hair
I just read “Hair Patrol” (May 2008) and wanted to tell you about my new routine: I use baking soda to wash my hair and vinegar to condition. The vinegar smell evaporates as hair dries. My long, curly hair looks better than it ever has, and I only wash it every seven to ten days.

Sizing up onions
I tried the recipe for Buckwheat and Calamari with Mango and Roasted Peppers (“Grains for Energy,” May 2008). Is the onion quantity correct? I like onions, but the flavor completely overwhelmed the other ingredients.

Thanks for your feedback. Strong, fresh foods — such as onions, garlic, and spices — can vary greatly in terms of pungency; one onion may be milder than another of the same variety. Same with size: You’ll find red onions the size of grapefruits, others the size of tangerines. In this case, try the recipe with ⅓ cup finely diced red onion. Then tell us what you think on the Delicious Living Forum.

Whoops
In April (“Another Reason to Eat Your Folate”), we reported that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency had raised the maximum contamination limit for arsenic in drinking water to 10 parts per billion. It was, in fact, lowered from 50 parts per billion to 10 parts per billion.

“I used to suffer from seasonal allergies. But I started taking 1,800 mg a day of vitamin D3, and I no longer suffer from allergy symptoms. If you have allergies, request a blood test from your physician. If your vitamin-D3 level is low, try additional D3.”
