Bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus).
Long known to aid eye disorders, bilberry, a close relative of the cranberry and blueberry, contains flavonoid compounds called anthocyanidins, which help protect the retina by scavenging free radicals. Bilberry has been shown to reduce capillary fragility and reduce bleeding that happens during early-stage macular degeneration.
Ginkgo (Ginkgo biloba).
Research suggests that ginkgo increases blood flow to the eyes, and therefore helps prevent conditions such as macular degeneration. Take standardized ginkgo in the following forms: dried herb, fluid extracts, tinctures, or capsules.
