While little drops of water may seem insignificant, together they can make an ocean. So, too, can individual actions make a meaningful difference for our environment on a large and noticeable scale. Here is a glimpse at the problem, and some steps you can take to be part of the solution.
Fast facts on our waste problem
- 400 million tons of plastic waste are created around the world each year
- 5 million plastic bottles are thrown away every hour in the US
- Though aluminum can be recycled, an estimated 7 million tons are still not recycled globally each year
- 40 percent of the food produced globally goes to waste, generating about 10 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions
5 actionable steps to sustainability
Reduce waste. Buy only what is essential, sidestepping single-use plastics, and avoiding buying products that use plastic packaging—or packaging altogether—where possible.
Recycle, properly. Take an extra minute or two to rinse containers, remove labels, and sort items according to your municipality’s instructions to ensure they actually gets recycled.
Leap on litter. Be part of the litter solution by encouraging others not to litter, getting involved in cleanup initiatives, going on walks to collect litter on your own or with a friend, or simply seizing each opportunity to put litter where it should be.
Shop sustainably. Taking a little extra time to make a careful, conscious, and informed decision when purchasing a product can be a truly meaningful act in defense of Mother Nature.
Eat mindfully. From meal planning and grocery shopping to cooking your own meals, practicing mindfulness has been shown to significantly reduce food waste.
