This month we’re making great efforts to save the bees (and other important pollinators) by sharing practical ways that everyone can help make a difference. Why do we need to save the bees? Because plant pollination via creatures is an essential part of our food system—and we’re experiencing rapid declines in bee populations worldwide. Check out our feature, Save the Bees, and these other stories:
• Move over, coffee! Our Senior Food Editor Jenna Blumenfeld is spotting more and more naturally caffeinated ingredients showing up in natural products, such as guayusa and yaupon. Read about the origins of these caffeinated plants and where you’ll find them in Jenna’s Fresh roundup. Plus, get our suggestions for cleaned-up Halloween treats and a recipe to make your own licorice chews.
• Don’t forget that October is Women’s Health Awareness month. An important part of women’s health is preventative care and being proactive by getting consistent physical exams and tests. Check out our list of what you should test for, how often and when to start.
• Have you heard the term biodynamic? If not, chances are you’ll hear more about it in the near future, as companies are looking for ways to get back to organic standards (and even enhance them). Learn about biodynamic farming, as well as the biodynamic products we’re starting to see on store shelves.
• Honey is a natural sweetener made from bees, but you don’t have to reserve it for drizzling over berries or stirring into tea. We’ve developed some unique and awesome honey recipes, from savory roasted cauliflower planks to honey-pecan sweet potato ice cream. Honey adds the perfect flavor element and texture to all of the honey recipes in our food feature story, Oh Honey, honey!
• October is also Gluten Free Month and a great time to raise awareness about celiac disease, gluten sensitivity and the basics of a gluten-free diet. There are some foods that get crossed off the list when eating gluten free, such as comfort foods typically made with wheat flour and crispy gluten-containing coatings. As a special treat, we’re sharing our gluten-free makeovers for two classic comfort foods: fried chicken and chocolate cake.
• If you’re new to gluten-free eating, check out our One-Week Gluten-Free Menu, complete with shopping list, that makes gluten-free eating and meal planning both easy and healthful.
• Speaking of bees and honey, there are some amazing health benefits that come right from the hive. Read our round-up of supplements and other nutritional products that are made from honey and other bee byproducts, such as propolis and pollen.
• And finally, you have a few more weeks to enter our Pinspiration contest to win a brand new Ninja blender system. Create a Pinterest board from content found right here at DeliciousLiving.com that represent the things that inspires you to live a healthy life.
