Kroger and Safeway—the #1 and #2 U.S. conventional grocery chains—have just joined other major retailers like Target, Meijer, Aldi, Giant Eagle, Whole Foods and many others in protecting consumers, wild salmon and the environment by rejecting GMO salmon, but there are many companies who still haven’t responded.
So, who’s next?
Costco is one of the largest retailers of salmon and seafood in the U.S. and is one of the last large retailers that hasn’t made a commitment not to sell GMO salmon.
The FDA is reviewing GE salmon for commercial production, and if the agency approves this risky fish it has indicated it would not likely require GE salmon to be labeled. That’s why CFS joined with Friends of the Earth, Food & Water Watch, Consumers Union and many others to urge supermarkets, seafood companies and restaurants to reject these fish if they come to market. We’ve had several victories so far, and with your help we can urge even more companies to avoid GE salmon.
