While many lament the lack of fresh fruits and vegetables in inner-city ‘food deserts,’ some urban areas have a solution. New documentary The Apple Pushers tells stories of immigrants who exclusively sell healthful foods from transportable street carts. When brick-and-mortar grocery stores don’t exist, these portable vendors provide.
“Each one of these street-cart vendors (or micro-entrepreneurs, really) was worthy of his or her own story. The tales of coming to America—they’re universal; it’s the human condition,” explains filmmaker Mary Mazzio in an interview with Organic Connections. “The fact that I can put out a narrative that excites people is really the power of film. It’s the visual crafting of a message.”
The Apple Pushers is currently being screened in cities across the United States.
