If you know someone who’s trying to make a difference in turning around the sorry state of America’s food system, here’s your chance to get them some recognition … and a cash prize. Until December 9, the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) is taking nominations for their fourth annual Growing Green Awards, an effort that “pays tribute to the most influential farmers, businesses, activists, and young leaders across America who are reimagining our food system.”
“Through this national award,” says the press release, “NRDC will recognize extraordinary contributions that advance ecologically integrated farming practices, climate stewardship, water stewardship, farmland preservation, and social responsibility from farm to fork.”
Growing Green Awards and prizes will be given for Food Producer ($10,000), Business Leader, and Young Food Leader ($2,500); in addition, the NRDC has added a category of Food Justice Leader ($2,500) to recognize leadership in creating a more equitable food system for disadvantaged communities and workers.
It’s a great opportunity to highlight the often unsung heroes of sustainable food, whether that’s your favorite local organic farmer, entrepreneur, or “green teen” dynamo. But get going: Applications are due by December 9, 2011. Winners will be announced in the spring.
