To beat cognitive decline, start guzzling beet juice. According to a new study in the journal Nitric Oxide: Biology and Chemistry, consuming high concentrations of dietary nitrates—found in beets, celery, cabbage, and some lettuce—can help keep your brain healthy as you age. During the study, drinking 16 ounces of beet juice at breakfast for just four days increased blood flow to the brain’s frontal lobes, degeneration of which is linked to dementia and cognitive impairment. So keep the blood—and the beet juice—flowing.
