After four weeks of travel across the country, I'm feeling … pretty darn good. Here are some tips to stay healthy this season–and a link to our brand new guide to building a strong immune system.
As I'm writing, it's after 11 p.m. on a November night in a small, slightly dingy, to remain-nameless chain hotel close to a Connecticut airport. The air circulation is poor. The noise level is high. The food options are limited to recommendations for restaurants that “haven’t gotten any complaints.” What’s surprising: I feel, well, pretty good. Heck, I may even write a blog.
Tonight is the last night on a string of trips that I’ve taken over the past month to visit some awesome natural products brands across the country. Healthy, right? While most of my trips have allowed me the opportunity to enjoy nutritious foods, and get some decent rest, the reality of any travel is that your healthy lifestyle habits are sometimes, or perhaps often, compromised. Even for the most health-conscious of us.
Our just-launched Guide to a Strong Immune System has helped me out a ton, and I think you’ll find it equally useful. In this guide, we outline how your immune system really works and why it is so important to take a proactive approach to staying healthy—i.e. follow this advice now (it’s easy, we promise) and you won’t have to deal with pesky seasonal illness later. Download it here to find recipes, supplements, and everyday lifestyle tips.
And here are just a few supersimple things that have kept me going strong while on the road.
I stick with my supplement regimen.
While your food choices will likely be more limited during travel, your supplement regimen doesn’t have to change one bit. I always pack, at the very least, my vitamin C and D (I increase both of these dosages when traveling and during winter), and a multi. Doesn’t hurt that I’ve gotten some great pick-me-ups along the way from some of my fave brands (vitamin B is another travel go to—gotta keep my energy high!).
I get my rest.
Easier said than done, I know, but adequate sleep is so important to a healthy immune system. One tip that I find works like a charm is to follow the same bedtime routine you do at home. It will make you feel at ease even in a new environment.
I drink lots of water.
It’s one of the easiest things you can do and hydration is also critical to supporting whole-body health.
I start my day with a yogurt or smoothie.
Almost any hotel or coffee shop will offer one. Yogurt contains probiotics that support immunity starting at the gut; smoothies offer immune-boosting antioxidants.
I'm not too hard on myself when I do slip up.
I am a habitual coffee drinker (I've tried to quit, I don't think it's happening), but my vice becomes all the more present while on the road. Sometimes I don't fight it, I go with it … I am, however, aware of whether it's masking true fatigue that can increase risk of illness or if it's interfering with sleep; and I quickly return to my typical coffee intake as soon as possible.
Ok, I’m off to bed (see tip #2). Have tried-and-true stay-healthy ideas of your own? I am always looking for ways to thrive on the road or in the air. Please share them here or tweet me @jessica_rubino.
Here’s to a happy and healthy season!
