I remember when I was in college (top left: that's me on campus, circa 1984) the cool place to eat was The Good Earth on University Avenue in Palo Alto; it was the only place around that served wholesome, even vegetarian food. It’s amazing that just a few decades ago the prevailing wisdom promoted additive-filled pseudofoods and toxic chemicals for healthier, cleaner lives. My, how far we’ve come! Today, most U.S. households purchase at least some organic foods and other healthy products, from toxin-free sunscreens to non-GMO vitamins.
But as they say, it takes as long to get out of a problem as it took to get into it, so the work continues. Dedicated visionaries and natural products retailers remain on the front lines of putting the power of health back into your hands.
In honor of our 30th year, for our August issue longtime contributor Lisa Marshall wrote an insightful past-present-future perspective on where the natural health movement has been, where it stands, and how it’s likely to unfold. Because August is also our Annual Health and Wellness Guide, in that issue and throughout the website you’ll find new, helpful info on "green chemistry" and innovative beauty products, four foods that are making a comeback, essential supplements for your health arsenal, and readers' favorite recipes from our archives. Also, don't miss the Lexicon of Sustainability page on Experiential Learning, a look at how hands-on agriculture classes and experiences for children affects all of our futures.
As founding editor Doug Greene says, Delicious Living has always been about connecting the dots. Thanks for reading and for contributing to a healthier, more sustainable life. Together, we’re still changing the world.
