Equal Opportunity Vitamins
The Healthy Foundation a public/private partnership supported by supplements manufacturers, has come up with a program that’s easy to swallow: Committed to improving the health of children and adults through vitamin supplementation, the foundation distributes chewable multivitamin and minerals to children at risk for malnutrition. The program started last year with the national initiative, Vitamin Relief USA-Children First, and now serves 6,500 needy children at 60-plus sites throughout the United States.
In May 2001, Congressman Frank Pallone, D-N.J., requested $6 million in Department of Education funding for Vitamin Relief USA, money the foundation hopes will enable vitamin distribution to more than 30,000 low-income children nationwide. “Although we have congressional interest on both sides of the aisle, the American public must speak up and be heard if this program is to be funded by Congress,” notes Michael Morton, executive director.
