I just put together this gallery of standout natural antiaging skin care, and the list of ingredients for repairing damaged cells, reversing sun damage and protecting from free radicals doesn't stop there. In just in the first weeks of 2012, new science has backed these plant-based ingredients:
Turmeric
I’ve covered this Ayurvedic spice as a natural skin care ingredient, used for its ability to fight skin-damaging free radicals and tame inflammation; new research further supports its ability to prevent sun-related skin aging. According to a study published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology turmeric not only has photo-protective qualities but also can increase sebum production for overall skin hydration (which is absolutely critical to preventing wrinkles in the long haul).
Yarrow
French research published in the International Journal of Cosmetic Science showed that the extract of this North American flowering plant may help reduce pore size and fine lines, both common effects of aging.
Tobacco collagen
OK, kind of cheating because research on this ingredient came onto the natural antiaging scene in 2010 and 2011, but it’s my prediction for the rising antiaging ingredient of 2012. Though only in wound-healing products now, tobacco-derived collagen (the only true plant-based collagen … don’t be fooled!) could see serious growth this year. Why? As many consumers learn about the benefits of collagen, a key personal care ingredient in Japan and Europe, many more can’t use the products, made from fish or cow cartilage, due to vegetarian or vegan lifestyles. I never thought I’d say this … solution: tobacco.
