5. Request no bread or chips
Many Italian restaurants automatically drop off a basket of bread, while Mexican eateries often start diners with a bowl of tortilla chips. If you’re hungry for these and they won’t spoil your dinner, go for it. But if you’d be accepting them “just because,” tell your server right away that you’d prefer to forgo the starters. Even if a host or busser arrives at your table bearing bread or chips before you’ve had a chance to say something, it’s still perfectly OK to decline. They’ll gladly deliver the untouched eats to another table.
