5 holistic and natural ways to care for your pet
Grooming
THE ISSUE: Products for dogs’ routine grooming, like shampoo and toothpaste, often contain harmful chemicals that can affect both a pet’s health and human health. Pet shampoos with sulfates, parabens, phosphates, and artificial perfumes and dyes can trigger redness, itching, hair loss, hives, ulcers and other allergy symptoms. Pet toothpaste can include artificial colors, sweeteners, preservatives and even propylene glycol (more antifreeze) to maintain moisture.
THE SOLUTION: First, don’t be tempted to use your own stuff. Human toothpastes often contain xylitol (toxic to dogs) or fluoride, which can cause intestinal upset in pets. People shampoos can strip away the protective layer on your pet’s skin, making it more vulnerable to parasites, viruses and bacteria. Also, don’t be fooled by pet grooming products with the word “natural,” cautions the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC); it’s an unregulated claim. Instead, look for pet-specific products labeled “certified organic” and items that contain minimal ingredients, such as dog toothpaste made with baking soda and coconut oil. The safest pet shampoos contain ingredients like aloe vera, essential oils, USDA Organic coconut oil, vegetable glycerin and citric acid.
