8 natural treatments for postpartum depression
Breathe.
Studies indicate that mindfulness techniques combat postpartum depression, and there are a variety of ways to go about it.
Meditation, for instance, doesn’t have to be about carving 20 minutes out of your day to practice quiet reflection.
“I teach people [meditation] starting with an activity that you already do,” Sanford says. “Brushing your teeth, taking a shower, walking your dog, drinking your tea. Every time your brain starts going toward your to-do list or what’s next, you redirect your attention to the sensory experience you’re having in the moment.”
At a stoplight, take a few deep breaths and pay attention to your breathing. Or take five minutes in the morning and evening to put your hand on your belly and notice your breath as it flows in and out of your body. “You don’t have to go out of your way,” Sanford says.
