Sure, it takes a little extra work, but it’s a fun way to transform ho-hum fruits and vegetables into enticing works of art. Often made from avocados, food roses can also be crafted from any firm, rounded fruit, such as apples, plums or pears. For a savory twist, use the same method with firm, small potato slices (just drizzle with olive oil and dust with sea salt and grated Parmesan before baking in a muffin tin to hold the shape).
- Cut produce in half lengthwise and remove the pit or seeds (and peel, if necessary). Set one half aside and place the other half in front of you, cut-side down.
- Using a sharp knife, slice the fruit crosswise as thin as possible.
- Using your palms, gently spread the fruit into a line while keeping the slices intact.
- Starting at one end of the line, roll the fruit into a rose shape. Flute the edges outward to enhance the rose.
