Myth: Supplements aren’t regulated.
In fact, the supplement industry has long been defined and regulated by the FDA under two federal statutes that outline Good Manufacturing Practices, regulations that cover safety, manufacturing and ingredients. By their very definition, dietary supplements, are meant to supplement the diet and not treat the disease like a drug—therefore, they aren’t regulated like drugs and can’t legally claim to treat a disease.
Many supplement companies go well beyond requirements in terms of quality assurance. Still, it’s important to do your research, choose products from trusted brands and retailers, and avoid products that make claims that are, in fact, too good to be true.
