What to ditch and what to stock for a healthier pantry
How to cut sugar
Scrutinize the ingredient list on all foods. Sometimes sugar is hidden behind healthier-sounding words, such as rice syrup, evaporated cane juice, fruit juice concentrate or cane sugar.
Check savory products, such as salad dressing, pasta sauce and ketchup, which can contain surprisingly high amounts of sugar even though they don’t taste sweet. Toss or donate “frosted” cereals, soda and products that contain high-fructose corn syrup; buy items sweetened with less-processed coconut sugar, raw honey and maple syrup.
