Whether you say “aww” or “ugh,” no other holiday incites emotions as strong as Valentine’s Day. While some complain it’s a Hallmark holiday, created to boost greeting card sales, I view this love-it-or-hate-it day as an opportunity to show friends, family and significant others you care about them—which can include attending that local “Death Metal Anti-Valentine’s Day” rock concert with your best gal-pal, by the way.
Below, find ten gifts to present to your loved ones on February 14th, most of which can be found at your local natural retailer.
1. Lagostina 6 Qt Pastailoa
Take a note from Lady and the Tramp, and use this pot to make perfect spaghetti. This stainless steel pasta pot set will help you make pasta like a pro, thanks to the variegated drainage system. Plus, it’s pretty enough to go from stove to table.
2. Local kombucha
Show that your love bubbles over by gifting your sweetie local kombucha, the slightly sweet, effervescent fermented tea. Lots of cities have local purveyors, and some natural foods stores even have kombucha on tap, so you can get an extra-fresh batch. My fave: Boulder’s Rowdy Mermaid kombucha, where I can buy ginger-infused varieties in a growler, and sip it throughout the week.
3. Yellow 108 Eastwood
Give the gift of swagger with this amazingly cool hat, made in the United States with 100 percent Merino wool and salvaged leather. Why is this style called “Eastwood”? It’s inspired by classic Western films, and nods to our main man Clint.
4. Unreal Candy Coated Milk Chocolate Gems
Like a cleaner M&M, these recognizable candies are tinted with beet juice, hibiscus juice and red cabbage juice instead of artificial color. Sweetened with Fair Trade Certified came sugar and organic blue agave, these better-for-you candies are packaged in a limited edition Valentine’s Day bag.
5. Cloudy Bay Pinot Noir
What’s sexier than toasting your love with a delicious pinot noir? Toasting your love with a delicious sustainable pinot noir. This awesome New Zealand red is from a winery that wins in regenerative practices, which range from using machinery (and grazing sheep) rather than herbicides to remove weeds, planting cover crops like legumes to boost soil health, using renewable energy to power their winery and more.
6. Arnica Massage Oil
Work out kinks and knots with this nourishing massage oil, made with soothing sunflower oil, olive oil, and arnica Montana flower extract—an ingredient widely used to assuage sprains, muscle pulls, bruises and bumps.
7. Cuppow Glass Travel Mug
Gift this take-along coffee mug to on-the-go caffeine hounds, which is swaddled in an insulating coozie made from recycled plastic bottles. I love how this glass mason jar container gets a functional update with a drinking lid made from BPA-free recycled plastic.
8. The Wild Diet: Go Beyond Paleo To Burn Fat, Beat Cravings, And Drop 20 Pounds In 40 Days (Avery, 2016) by Abel James
Are you wild about your partner? This cookbook offers ultra-clean recipes ranging from coconut-flour pancakes to mini cheese-free portabella pizzas—and chronicles the author’s lifestyle change to health. The key: Eat foods that can be found in nature—and if you are going to eat dairy, make sure it’s either grass-fed butter or ghee.
9. Jeni’s Honey Butterscotch Sauce
Does your honey need a little honey? Drizzle this robust, burnt-caramel sauce over ice cream, yogurt or toast for a decadent treat. Jeni’s takes simply ingredients like Wildflower Oregon honey, sugar, cream, butter and sea salt, and alchemizes them into a golden, silky topping.
10. Coast: Recipes Inspired By Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Coast (HarperCollins 2016) by Rachel Allen
Perfect for cold, blustery evenings, the recipes in this gorgeous cookbook channel the rustic heritage of Ireland’s coastal towns and villages. Cozy up with Bread, Wine and Cheese Gratin—a white wine-soaked concoction of Cheddar, mustard, sourdough bread and wild mushrooms—or tuck into a slice of White Soda Bread with Dillisk—a simple homemade bread infused with dillisk (also called dulse), an edible seaweed reminiscent of bacon.
