The SELECT trial was an unfortunate waste of money. The use of synthetic dl-form of vitamin E, which displaces gamma tocopherol was a recipe for problems. A study by Helzlsouer (2000) in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute showed that men with the highest gamma tocopherol had a fivefold reduction in prostate cancer. The SELECT trial didn't take gamma tocopherol into consideration and thus wasted $114 million dollars, while also misinforming the public with a poorly drawn conclusion.</p>
