Welcome to the latest edition of Unboxed, where Delicious Living's Senior Food Editor Jenna Blumenfeld reviews the latest natural food and beverage products that have crossed her desk.
This week: Snacks galore! Vegan munchies eliminate the need for cheese, granola goes paleo, bioavailable ingredients take center stage—and more.
We commend this snack for including a trio of USDA Organic nutrient-dense seeds (sesame, flax, chia) with sweet add-ins like cane syrup, brown rice syrup, coconut, organic cinnamon and natural flavors. It's also Certified Gluten-Free and contains 4 grams of fiber per serving.
This new line of allergen-friendly cookies will be a perfect lunchbox treat for school children of all ages. We like these mini cookies mostly because of what they don’t contain; all Enjoy Life products are free from the top eight allergens: wheat, dairy, peanuts, tree nuts, egg, soy, fish and shellfish. These are sweet and fruity, and made with rice, buckwheat, millet, chocolate chips, raw cane sugar, palm shortening, brown cane sugar, vanilla extract and more. While I wouldn’t exactly call them “soft”—these were pretty crunchy—they were a fab cookie option.
This handy, 35-calorie pouch contains one American-grown, USDA Organic ingredient: blueberries! These particularly plump blueberries are grown with organic compost to support soil health and produce ultra-tasty berries. Freeze-drying extends their shelf life to 18 and makes them a pleasantly crunchy, nutrient-dense snack.
These totally vegan puffed snacks are primarily made with protein- and fiber-rich chickpeas. Dedicated to spreading “peas” (get it?), this new, conscious company somehow formulated an organic snack that delivers on crunch, curl and that addictive “cheese” dust you can lick off of your fingers. Also contains: organic rice flour, organic sunflower oil, organic tapioca starch, organic seasonings and organic pea hull fiber.
Now you can enjoy Justin’s signature nut butter with a sturdy banana chip, made of sliced organic bananas, organic coconut oil, organic sugar and organic honey. With 6 grams of protein for the entire packet, this Certified Gluten-Free snack is a swell addition to Justin’s existing line of snack packs, which contain crunchy, salty pretzels.
Karma’s NEXTY-winning Wrapped Cashews (cashews with their crispy, satiating natural skin still intact) get a spicy, citrus-y makeover. Perfect for cocktail parties or cubicle snacking, these cashews are dusted with onion, salt, lime powder and onion extract. Maltodextrin helps keep spices stuck on the nuts.
When you pop a handful of this delicious, refined sugar-free granola, you'll forget you follow a paleo diet. Made without grains, Kitchfix’s Certified Paleo mix beautifully blends almonds, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, raisins, maple syrup, unsweetened coconut, cashews, walnuts, coconut oil, vanilla extract, flax, cinnamon and sea salt. All straightforward ingredients without any synthetic preservatives, added flavorings or gluten.
An alternative to traditional baked cheese crackers, these vegan- and gluten-free snacks from juice company Green Mustache will satisfy kids’ craving for a playful afterschool snack. These crunchy, USDA Organic crackers are made with garbanzo bean flour, RSPO palm oil, potato starch, rice flour, kale puree, pea protein, yeast extract, onion powder, chia seeds and more—all in a whimsical handlebar mustache shape.
Can soup be considered a snack? Because Eden’s new instant miso requires just the addition of hot water, this organic, 25-calorie mini-meal is definitely a snack in our book. Made with sumptuous rice and hacho misos, kuzu, wakame sea vegetable, green onions and sea salt, this umami broth would serve as a prime foundation for Asian-inspired stews. Just watch the sodium content: each serving contains a whopping 590 milligrams.
Salty snack fiends will adore these better-for-you snacks, which also come in two other varieties. Wavy, gluten-free chip-like “crinkles” are made with Non-GMO Project Verified potato flakes, native potato starch, whole-grain yellow corn, and sour cream and onion seasonings, such as organic nonfat milk solids, sea salt, onion powder, natural flavor, yeast extract and more.
Sol Simple packages some of the tastiest dried USDA Organic mangoes we have ever sampled. But that’s not why we’re in love this conscious company. Sol Simple’s mission is to connect mindful consumers with small farmers in tropical countries like Nicaragua, where in 2015 alone the company created 220 jobs. Sol Simple’s namesake refers to its sun-powered hybrid dryer, which dries fruit inside using renewable solar energy.
Raw and vegan brand Two Moms In The Raw recently rebranded as Soul Sprout, a name that highlights the Colorado-based company’s commitment to incorporating bioavailable ingredients, like sprouted almonds, walnuts, pecans and pumpkin seeds. This fruity bar delivers 190 calories derived from the aforementioned nuts, plus organic blueberries, date paste, chia seeds, raw hemp seeds, strawberry powder, cinnamon and more.
