Instead of margarine, Crisco, hydrogenated oil, or oil-roasted foods that are not as easily digestible or might exacerbate allergies, use butter, ghee, or mechanically pressed (cold or expeller-pressed) vegetable oils. The best are olive, sesame, and almond oils.
To aid in digestion and reduce food allergies, use honey (the raw, uncooked type only), maple syrup, stevia, anise, or fennel in place of white, brown, or "natural" sugar. Herbal stevia helps normalize blood sugar and does not produce artificial sweeteners' negative side effects, such as headaches, skin irritations, and other disorders resulting from neurotoxins, according to some studies. Do not cook or bake with honey; it irritates mucosal tissue when significantly heated.
