1. Black cohosh. Research suggests that black cohosh (Cimicifuga racemosa), an herb widely used in Europe, is effective in treating hormonal hot flashes. In research, 40 mg of a standardized extract of black cohosh was taken twice a day.
  2. Organic edamame. Filled with isoflavones, an estrogenlike substance found in plants, these green soybeans provide a natural way to combat hot flashes and other menopausal symptoms. Edamame can be eaten as a snack or added to soups, salads, or other dishes.
  3. Estrogen or progesterone creams. Over-the-counter creams that contain estrogen or progesterone may help ease hot flashes. Because some brands are stronger than others, and the regimen for using these creams can vary by patient, women should work with a naturopathic physician or other knowledgeable health practitioner to choose an appropriate cream.
