Lori Schmidt, esthetician at The Oaks at Ojai in Ojai, California, shares a simple, all-natural beauty recipe that uses nutritious flaxseed and nourishing, probiotic-rich, skin-brightening yogurt.
While making my breakfast of granola, yogurt, and flaxseeds, I had an "ah-ha" moment. You can find flaxseeds virtually everywhere these days; in cereals, trail mixes, and baked goods. It’s easy to understand why, considering all of their nutritional benefits. They are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients, and fiber. In addition, one unique property of flaxseeds is a type of phytoestrogen, which are lignans that offer significant antioxidant and cancer prevention properties.
When the seeds are soaked in water, they produce a clear coating of mucilage that has a syrupy-to-jelly-like consistency. My flash of inspiration was to use the seeds and their nutrient-rich coating topically.
When applied to the skin the mucilage has a soothing and moisturizing effect. I combined it with Greek yogurt, which adds lactic acid, a natural exfoliator. I recommend this DIY mask for normal, dry, dull, agin, or oily skin.
How to make Greek Yogurt and Flaxseed Facial Mask
- In a small bowl, place two teaspoons of flaxseed. Cover with hot or boiling water (the hotter the water, the faster it is absorbed) and allow the mixture to sit. After a few minutes, you’ll find that the seeds are bonded together in a clear, gelatinous substance.
- Next add 2 to 3 rounded teaspoons of plain whole yogurt. I like to use unflavored, unsweetened Greek yogurt.
- Stir the mixture thoroughly so the seeds are evenly distributed and the mask is ready for use.
- Make sure that your skin is freshly cleansed, then, with your hair pulled back, apply a thin layer over your face and throat. If there is extra, apply it to the backs of your hands and arms. Then let the formula work its moisturizing magic on your skin for at least 10 to15 minutes. In fact it’s a great thing to do while you’re in a relaxing bath. Then rinse with warm water and follow with a moisturizer. You’ll love your fresh new skin.
