Healthy lifestyle tips for the whole family

Keeping yourself and your family thriving requires good health habits. Here are the resources you need to get started.

As a mom of two—now 8 and 5 years old—I know what a juggling act it is for parents to honor everyone’s needs, including their own. Several of my close friends are new second-time parents, which for me signaled the start of a whole new level of sleep (and self-care) deprivation. As I witness my friends’ transitions, I’m reminded again how important it is for each of us to establish replenishing habits so that we can stay strong and resilient, body and mind, for years to come.

I highly recommend a wonderful book called A Natural Guide to Pregnancy and Postpartum Health (Avery, 2003), coauthored by Delicious Living’s longtime medical editor, Robert Rountree, MD. But self-care isn’t just for moms; dads need it, too.

The advice in our story “Manage Sleep Deprivation” is a great place to start: I take adaptogens, avoid coffee and clear mental chatter by meditating 20 minutes before going to bed. I also find that eating the right breakfast, planning superhealthy 30-minute-or-less dinners, and making time to do nothing keep me, my husband, and our kids thriving despite life’s inevitable ups and downs.

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is very much important to stay fit and fine. Eating a proper diet, exercise, adequate amount of sleep and a positive attitude is the key to good health. Avoid junk food, beverages containing caffeine and sugary food. Another important thing is meditation that relaxes the body as well as mind.
